At this point, it feels like having a side hustle is just part of being alive. Your barista has a jewelry shop, your coworker flips sneakers, and your cousin is low-key famous on TikTok for reviewing Trader Joe’s snacks. Me? I’ve decided my contribution to hustle culture is making digital products, aka things you can buy, download, and use instantly without either of us ever touching a shipping label.

Digital products are the dream scenario for anyone who hates Post Office lines. They’re stuff like downloadable planners, Canva templates, Lightroom presets, fonts, stock photos, and online courses. You make it once, upload it, and boom—it’s ready to sell forever. There’s no inventory, no “out of stock” drama, and no boxes taking over your living room.

The Creator Economy Is Booming

And here’s the thing: the creator economy is literally exploding. Some numbers for proof:

  • There are over 200 million creators worldwide, and that number is still climbing.
  • The industry was worth $250 billion in 2023 and is expected to hit $480 billion by 2027.
  • Over 1.5 million Americans now work full-time as digital creators, up from 200,000 in 2020.
  • Digital products are becoming a major moneymaker, responsible for roughly a quarter of creator revenue.

After a week of research (read: scrolling Etsy, Reddit, and TikTok until I started seeing templates in my dreams), I noticed some key themes:

  1. Aesthetics Matter, But Ease of Use Wins. Shoppers love gorgeous templates but don’t want to fight with software to customize them.
  2. Niche is Powerful. Products designed for a specific vibe or profession perform better than generic offerings.
  3. People Want Solutions, Not Homework. Plug-and-play products, where you download, edit, and post, are in high demand.

That insight is shaping the products I’m working on:

  • Canva Template Packs: Clean, versatile templates for brands and creators who want a polished look without design headaches.
  • Lightroom Presets: Easy, one-click edits for photographers, influencers, and small businesses.
  • Social Media Content Packs with Motion Design: A step beyond static images—short animations and motion graphics to make posts stand out.

I want to create products that feel premium but are intuitive enough for a beginner to use right away.

Why I’m Excited About This Direction

I’ve worked as a designer and photographer for years, which means I’ve spent plenty of time creating custom branding assets, marketing materials, and visual content for clients. Turning that experience into scalable digital products feels like a natural next step.

This approach lets me:

  • Build a portfolio of assets that can generate income long after they’re made.
  • Experiment with style, trends, and motion design without being tied to client feedback cycles.
  • Create tools that genuinely help small business owners, content creators, and freelancers look professional without a huge budget.

The best part? Digital products offer a low barrier to entry and nearly unlimited growth potential. The creator economy’s growing rise means there’s plenty of space for unique voices and ideas, especially for products that solve real problems.

The Hustle (Without the Burnout)

Building a digital product shop is equal parts exciting and overwhelming. There are mood boards, spreadsheets, and countless hours spent deciding between two very similar fonts. But it’s also flexing my creative muscles: I’m building something that’s entirely my own, leveraging skills I’ve developed over years of freelance work, and contributing to a thriving digital economy that shows no signs of slowing down.

Whether this turns into a steady business or just teaches me more about design and marketing, I’m glad I decided to join the side hustle movement. If nothing else, I’ll end up with a portfolio full of products I’m proud of.
