Big Sur is a breathtaking destination, but its rugged terrain and spotty cell service create unique challenges for visitors. With the website redesign complete, the next logical step was developing a mobile app to deliver essential information when and where travelers needed it most. The goal was to create an intuitive, lightweight app that prioritized real-time updates and offline functionality while keeping more detailed content on the website.
Designing the App Experience
The app needed to be straightforward, prioritizing quick access to essential travel information. The homepage was designed with clear, user-friendly sections:
- Quick Links: Immediate access to Highway 1 road conditions, weather updates, and upcoming events.
- Featured Destinations: Highlighting popular parks, trails, and scenic stops for easy trip planning.
- Emergency Alerts: Real-time notifications for wildfires, road closures, or other urgent issues affecting travel.
Navigation was kept simple, with five main menu sections:
- Explore – A guide to hiking trails, beaches, scenic stops, and local businesses.
- Travel – Up-to-date road conditions, safety tips, parking information, and public transportation details.
- Events – A calendar of local happenings, from art festivals to conservation efforts.
- Residents – A section dedicated to community resources, local services, and real estate information.
- Nature – Information on Big Sur’s ecosystems, wildlife, and conservation initiatives.
- Settings – Customizable preferences, offline mode, and emergency contact info.

What Belonged in the App?
The biggest challenge was determining what features needed to be available on the app versus what was better suited for the website. Since visitors often lacked internet access, we prioritized offline functionality and real-time updates:
- Offline Maps – Ensuring users could find their way even without cell service.
- Road & Weather Updates – Essential for safety, with push notifications for major changes.
- Hiking & Camping Info – Including trail maps, difficulty levels, and campsite availability.
- Local Business Listings – Contact details, hours, and recommendations for food, gas, and lodging.
- Emergency Services – Quick access to ranger stations, medical aid, and evacuation procedures.
What Stayed on the Website?
More detailed and static content remained on the website, such as:
- Historical & Cultural Information – Articles on Big Sur’s history, indigenous heritage, and artistic significance.
- Long-Term Lodging & Real Estate – Primarily relevant to potential residents rather than short-term visitors.
- Community News & Public Resources – Content aimed at local residents rather than travelers.
Building for the Future
The app was designed to be an evolving tool, with the potential for future updates like user-submitted trail conditions, audio guides, and integrated trip planning. By focusing on a streamlined, practical experience, the Big Sur app ensures that visitors can make the most of their time in this stunning region—staying safe, informed, and connected even in the most remote areas.
